Posted on Tue, 9 Jun 2015
Question: My grandaughter was the first one to develop stomach pain. After her my daughter received it too. They called it the stomach bug. I'm 65 and developed it last. Ever since that initial time I try to resolve the issue by eating healthy and such. This has been over a month. I lost some weight only to gain it back. I'm constantly in pain bloated and burping constantly. I really getting worried over my condition. I'm not really sure what is happening. The pain goes away when I don't eat, only to return when I do. In the meantime I find the only recourse is to not eat at all. It works for a while only to the point when I become so hungry I eat. Maybe my choices are wrong, I try to eat very healthy. Salads, tuna, cereal etc. only to become infected again. What is going on. It is limiting my life to the point where I usually would exercise and keep in shape. Please help me and tell me what's going on!!!!!

Brief Answer:
basic investigations and treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
I hope your daughter and Grand-daughter are absolutely fine now.

To recapitulate; Female /65 - over a month - developed stomach bug after the grand-daughter and daughter got similar problems - lost and gain weight - Pain > bloating > burping the moment food is taken - limiting the life...

My thoughts and line of action considering all the issues including your age of 65:
- First of all to get the stool checked on 3 consecutive days.
- Blood and urine: routine and for diabetes, Kidney and liver functions
- X-ray of the abdomen in standing position
- Upper GI Endoscopy and
- Ultrasonography as a baseline investigations and to get an idea .
** Get started with a course of an antibiotic and metronidazole for 5 days
Add on Probiotics, Activated charcoal tablets
Symptomatic treatment with a PPI like Omeprazole and motility regulator like Domperidone, antacid 3 hourly (Rolaids you are taking already). Continue the laxatives as you say are needed the most.

See the reports and the results.
If everything settles, well and good. If does not, take and opinion of a Gastroenterologist and further investigations as may be needed.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis, and get a proper further treatment. Please feel free to ask for more or if you need further clarifications or if you feel there is a gap of communication.
