What Causes White Blood Cells To Be Low?
Question: Had thyroid cancer surgery last July. Since then, had 4 CBCs, and the WBC for two of them were in the 8s (8.9 and 8.3, months ago and under a lot of stress). Recently had another surgery, scalp cyst removal and my WBC was 7.3 (6 weeks ago). Used bacitracin for 3 weeks and had another CBC this past Monday and my WBC came back at 5.5. Could the surgery and antibiotic cream have caused a decrease in WBC? Concerned that it is falling from the high 8s to middle 5s. All thyroid bloodwork has been excellent.
Brief Answer:
No
Detailed Answer:
Surgery or the antibiotic cream in question are not known to lower the WBC count.
I see you are on synthroid and Vitamin D. As you may have surmised, neither of these two are related to WBC count.
I understand you are concerned about the variability in the WBC counts but as long as it remains in the normal range it is generally not of concern.
However, you can take this matter up with your primary care provider or a hematologist
