What Causes Whooshing Sensation In Ear When I Burp?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Apr 2015
Question: When I burp, yawn or hiccup I feel a wooshing sensation in my left ear. Sometimes is worse than others, but fairly chronic.

I have also take a flashlight to my nose on the same side, and way up there on the same side as my ear I can see a hole. It looks like the nostril is divided in half. One section next to the septum, and then a bone like thing hanging down with a hole next to that leading towards my eye.

Is that normal to see in the nose? Is it possible the two are related? Should I be worried about the wooshing sensation, and is there anything to be done to get rid of it? Can I still go swimming and scuba dive with this problem?

Brief Answer:
no worries, get an ENT assessment

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Whooshing sound is a normal and common day to day phenomenon due to connection of ear cavity to the mouth through eustachian tube, yawning or burping or hiccuping all changes the pressure in the oral cavity and thus in eustachian tube and thus in ear cavity and thus a whooshing sound.

As far as self diagnosing the nasal cavity is not wise. Using a torch light and trying to examine nasal anatomy can be misleading and simple normal turbinate or concha may be mistaken for some grave pathology.

For example that hole above the nasal septum you talk about is a very grave manifestation of an autoimmune disease of wegener's granulomatosis and has a very widespread autoimmune manifestation from head to toe involving all organs systems.

What you think of the anatomical defect could be a mere normality. Just get an otorhinolaryngologist and let them have a look. If you don't have any symptoms even that is not necessary but for the peace of mind it can be done. As far as the results are concerned, those will be normal i am sure.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
