What Causes Worsening Of Spirometry Results After Having Symbicort?

Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: Hi went for a followup visit to doctor to assess my condition after the use of symbicort 160/4.5 bid for one month.
.
the spirometry results where worse than before when I was not taking any medication although I feel ok.

the doctor told me not to worry because spirometry is statistical and could get different reading from day-to-day

He told me to stop the inhaler for 2 months and let us see.

Today I started to feel cold symptoms, sore throat no fever and chest irritation no cough.

any advice what to do? I started taking NAC 500mg twice

Brief Answer:
At present you are having URTI mostly.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
At present, you are having mostly Upper respiratory tract infection ( URTI ).
Because cold and sore throat are seen in URTI.
So no need to worry much.
Follow these steps for better symptomatic relief.
1. Drink plenty of fluids. Keep your self hydrated.
2. Avoid stress and tension.
3. Avoid oily and spicy food.
4. Warm water gargles 5 - 6 times a day.
5. Start antihistamine and anti inflammatory drugs.
Since these drugs are prescribed medicines, you need doctor's prescription for these.
And no need for inhaler at present. And you can continue NAC. No harm in it.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry much for this results.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
FEV1 of 85% is normal. And even 80% is normal too. If your FEV1 is less than 80% then and then you are considered to have airway obstruction and should be started inhaler drugs.
PFT is highly effort dependent test. So variation of 5% can be acceptable and no need to worry much for this.
Hope I have solved your query.
