Posted on Wed, 27 Aug 2014
Question: Brown muddy stool with bits of food in it. Looks like brown chili. It sinks and there is no oil. Some times golden brown and when I wipe it can look a little yellowish brown. Have fatty liver per ultra sound ans alt of 79 ast 40 all other liver function test normal per blood work. colonoscopy 3 benign polyps and diverticulosis. Had abdominal ct scan with contrast and XXXXXXX told everything looks good. Have had on and off for a year but it is all the time last 3 months. Changed diet 30 days ago and have lost 30 pounds on purpose. 60 pounds overweight. I now eat oatmeal, salads, mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions. Whole wheat and egg whites. I also eat chick and fish. Nothing else since I need to fix the fatty liver and lose weight. I do not drink. Brother has IBS and diverticulosis. Could this be IBS and how do I fix these constant mud/chili stools? Thank you!

Dear Sir

In the absence of blood in stools and other associated symptoms , colour of stools cannot be given much weight age . There is definitely no cause for concern. Color of stools is usually based on type of food consumed. The color is likely to be due to consumption of tomatoes .
Irritable bowel syndrome is diagnosis of exclusion. Ensuring adequate content of water will be helpful.

Thank you Doctor. I am 35 and 5'10. I weigh 229 but did weigh 257 last month. No blood, mucous, or oil. Just small particles of food which make the stool lumpy and it breaks apart. even the more solid stools have water on them. All I drink is water or unsweetened black tea. Probably 100 ounces or more a day. Thank you for your help doctor. Is this not enough water?
