What Chances Of Having A Baby Are Reduced By Smoking And Drinking Alcohol Every Night Along With Stress?

Question: Hi doctors! I'm a 30yo female and my fiance is 40yo male. We really want to have kids but for the past few years we've been working 12 hours a day in stressful jobs. At night, we drink and smoke 4mg cigarettes together to unwind and relax. How will this affect our chances of having a baby? We are hoping to start a family after our wedding when we are 32 and 42yo. Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to XXXXXXX

Smoking and drinking, both cause negative effect on your chances of conception.

Cigarette smoke contains many chemicals including carbon monoxide and nicotine.

These chemicals can damage your ovary in a way that it looses eggs more quickly.
Chances of genetically abnormal eggs production increases.

Men who smoke regularly have a lower sperm count, sperms are less active and % of abnormal shape increases. Due to effect of carcinogens, sperms can become genetically abnormal.

These chemicals can also effect fertilization and implantation.

Alcohol decrease fertility of male and female.

It decreases testosterone level, sperm quality and quantity and libido in men.

Thus both of you should avoid smoking and drinking.

You should find out other ways of recreation/relaxing like light music.

If you have further query, please feel free to ask.

With good wishes,
