Question: Hi,

I have suddenly experienced an inflammation in the wrist area with a lump appearing in the area as in the attached photo.

I have recently started taking candersartan medication. The inflammation is not painful but appears to be itchy.

What could be the cause?

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Other causes should be ruled out and change over to other medication SOS

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and clear photos.
Inflammation without pain and itchiness of the wrist joint.
Candersartan is known to cause swelling of joints and muscle problems. But as per the photographs that you have provided other causes of such swelling should also be ruled out. Say for example- Tenosynovitis, ganglion in this area. This can be done by clinical examination by a Doctor, trans-illumination in a dark room, supplemented by high resolution Ultrasound or so.
If such local causes are ruled out then the medication can be taken as one of the probable cause of the wrist joint swelling and your Doctor may want to change over to other medication. No medicine is to be stopped or changed without the treating Doctors' orders. Please note this.
I hope this answer help-s you.

Thanks Dr. Chandrakant,

I have seen the GP who diagnosed a ganglion cyst but to be confirmed with ultrasound. I do have a ganglion cyst on right hand just below the finger confirmed by ultrasound previously.

I am not sure as in this case the cyst seemed to get progressively larger over the course of a few hours. Is it normal for a ganglion cyst to develop so quickly.

Also can the candersartan medication contribute to the formation of the cyst, possibly by causing inflammation of the joints which then leads to the joint fluid leakage causing cyst formation?

Thank you,
Regards.

Brief Answer:
as detailed.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Ganglion is usually a slowing swelling. Usually from a tendon and not the joint.
Get it confirmed by an Ultrasound.
Some cysts/ganglion can appear overnight. It can develop faster if the instigating or enhancing factor is present.
Already answered about Candersartan above, possibility is always there.
Usually no medicines are known to give ganglion unless there is some pre-existing condition.
I hope this answers your additional queries.
