Question: I am 46 year old female who is currently experiencing a prolonged period. For the past few months my periods have been eratic. This current period arrived two weeks later than normal. My periods generally last 6/7 days. I am currently on day 11 and am still having minimal spotting/brownish discharge. What could be the cause should I be overly concerned?

Hello dear,
Thanks for trusting us about your health care.
I have gone through your history and understand your concerns.
As per your description these symptoms could be due to hormonal changes due to your age( perimenopausal stage).
But as you are having irregular menstrual cycle with scanty menses and prolonged period you can go for some basic investigations as well to rule out the other causes of your symptoms.
Get your pelvic ultrasound to see the endometrial thickness and any other causes of your symptoms like fibroid and polyp.
Get your thyroid profile and hemoglobin test also.
Take a high protein diet with lots of vegetables and fruits and exercise regularly. You can add some calcium, vitamin d3 and soya protein in your diet.
