What Could Cause Bruising On The Leg And Severe Swelling A Decade After Repair Of A Large Aneurysm In The Leg?

Question: My husband had a large aneurysm in leg and it was repaired. Now, about 10 years later, that leg has bruising from hip to ankle and is extremely swollen. Is it possible that the repair is leaking?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The aneurysm in the leg was on the inside of his leg, about 4 inches up from the knee. It was repaired by a vascular surgeon, by removing and replacing that part of the artery. He has been on blood thinners for quite some time. He is not currently taking the blood thinners because he just spent 11 days in the hospital because he had profuse bleeding from internal hemorrhoids and they could not get the bleeding to stop. After he came home from the hospital, about 3 days after, his leg now has what appears to be a massive bruise from his upper thigh to his ankle. His leg is swollen to the point that the skin on his leg is pulled tight.

Brief Answer:
Please let me know details of the aneurysm and treatment done

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Please let me know where the aneurysm in the leg was and how was it treated?
If you have any documents pertaining to the same, they would be helpful.
It is possible that his aneurysm could have leaked. Since you have mentioned that he is not on any medication then it is unlikely to be due to blood thinners.
Please contact a Vascular Surgeon for the treatment or let me know the details.

Take care and hope your husband has a fast recovery.
Do let me know how I can be of help.

Brief Answer:
Please see the Vascular Surgeon

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

It must have been a Popliteal artery aneurysm.

As I mentioned in my earlier answer, it is possible that there is leakage. A color doppler test will be necessary. I recommend that he reports back to his vascular surgeon for evaluation.
