What Could Cause High Uric Acid?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Nov 2024
Question: I did my blood test today as a regular check up and attached is the report. I am consulting for the uric acid level that seems to be high.

I Wanted to know how what could have caused this and what I can do to reduce this. I heard about some things that can cause an increase in uric acid so I am listing my diet and other stuff here.

- I eat three boiled eggs in the morning
- For lunch I have rice, some curries like sambar or dal with a sabji
- I take one scoop of whey protein (One scoop containing 24 grams of proten) per day around 6 pm
- I hav 200 grams of chicken breast every day with about 40 gams of oats and cucumber
- I have two cups of tea - one in the morning and one in the evening

I workout 6 days a week - about 1 hour 15 minutes every day. I started working out aroud 3 months back although before that I had been donig exercises at home. recently I have been trying to lift more. I got golfer's elbow about a couple of weeks back so I haven't been to the gym for a few days now as I am resting.

I also probably contracted corona in January but i did not get tested. My wife got tested and she was positive.

Please let me know what could cause high uric acid and what i should do to reduce it.

Brief Answer:
Your diet is not balanced

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

What is the value of uric acid in blood?
From your description, I can see that your diet is not balanced. It is high in protein and low in fat and fiber. Egg, chicken and whey protein are not so easily digested as curry and dal. It would be good to add some fruits to your diet. Also replace whey, chicken and eggs with vegetarian balanced diet according to your culture. If you eat chapati and dal routinely, then resume that diet.
Drink lots of clean water to flush out uric acid.
This should help lower the uric acid. Re-check after 3 months.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you, doctor.
Regarding your question what is the value of uric acid in blood - I had uploaded my blood test results. May be it did not et uploaded. I will upload again, but to answer your question, the value is 8.1.

Is there any particular item(s) that could be causing this increase in uric acid - like Whey or chicken? OR is it because the general high protein intake? I am asking to know because I was asked to add more protein in my diet as it was originally low in protein and my workout requires me to take more (adequate) protein as per my body weight (currently 72 kg, my height is 6 " 2.).

I also read that strenuous workout can also cause increase in uric acid. I do drink at least 3.5 liters of water a day.

Brief Answer:
Uric acid is breakdown product of purines

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Uric acid is a breakdown product of purine (derived from animal proteins). So diet has corelation with uric acid levels. So also many other factors. High protein diet has shown to have corelation with rising uric acid levels, so switching to a balanced diet is required.
Among chicken and whey, chicken has more chances of increasing uric acid. Whey protein has to be taken with caution if uric acid is increased.
Strenuous workout (as well as other factors like fever etc) can cause an increase in purine pool and increased uric acid.
