Question: I'm 73 yr old female retired school teacher. For 8 yrs have worn Poise pads for occasional leakage. This morning I woke up to blood in urine and mucousy blood on tissue upon wiping. Also, very frequent urges to urinate and weird squeezing pain upon urinating that radiates even out to my arms. Totally strange.

Brief Answer:
Probably urinary tract infection, follow the advice below

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to urinary tract infection.
Urinary tract infection is one of the common causes of blood in urine.
I suggest you to do the following examinations to confirm the cause:
-a complete blood count
-a urinalysis
-a urine culture
Treatment consists in antibiotics after the confirmation of the diagnosis.

Meanwhile, some advices that I can give to you are:
-take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen 400 mg,three times a day
-take vitamin c supplements
-drink liquids

Hope my answer was helpful.

Thank you Dr Dorina, I have been guzzling water ever since you suggested, also Centrum Silver dose with 167 % of drd vitamin C. Could not get dr appointment as my regular for many years dr disappeared from the group practice about 10 mo ago. Their “same day “ clinic was booked. Tomorrow I will try by calling the same day office the minute they open. Where is the best place to obtain the tests you suggested? Would I need urgent care or ER?

Brief Answer:
You can visit an urgent care.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,
You can visit an urgent care based on the pain that you feel while urination.
Urinary tract infections are not a life threatening diagnosis so don't worry.
Anyway urgent care costs less and can be covered by health insurance.

Hope I helped you.
Take care,
Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi
