What Could Cause Numbness In The Right Abdominal Region And The Left Foot And Toes?

Question: Hi I've got some quite serious neurological issues that my doctor thinks could be stemming from a recent higher than normal thyroid reading of 4.9 and he started me 5 days ago on 25mg of eltroxin so far no changes in my symptoms
I've had MRI's about 2.5 years ago on Brain/spine with no signs of MS
I've had all blood tests done last week and only the thyroid reading was out of place
My symptoms are numbness being felt on the skin (in a large section) of my right side stomach region, numbness in my left foot (in toes)
Apart from some carpel tunnel symptoms (which was confirmed from a nerve conduction study test a couple of years ago) I'm very healthy
Do you think it's possible the thyroid could be causing my symptoms or do you think it's worth doing another MRI and see if anything has changed from my last MRI about 2.5 years ago

Brief Answer:
The thyroid gland cannot explain your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The normal range of TSH is 0,4- 4. Your level is not too high and if your thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) are within the range, you have a condition called subclinical hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is also called underactive thyroid or low thyroid and means that the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, weakness, weight gain, hair loss, cold intolerance and muscle cramps.

Numbness on the skin of the stomach and numbness in the toes or paresthesia is not a common symptom of hypothyroidism. Paresthesia is usually a symptom related to a sensory nerve being damaged, diseased or injured.

Therefore, to answer to your question, in my opinion, it is not the thyroid gland that has caused your symptoms. I think there is a neurological basis and yes, it is better to do another MRI to see if there is something new that can explain the symptoms.

I suggest to consult a local neurologist for the right diagnosis and treatment.

Hope this information is helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Thanks will get another MRI this week
In regards to the 25mg thyroid medication my gp put me on for the 4.9 reading do you think it's a good idea to stay on this regardless of what we may/may not find with the MRI ?

Brief Answer:
Do you have any of the symptoms of the list?

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Subclinical hypothyroidisms generally do not need thyroid hormone replacement therapy. When the patient starts to have symptoms of hypothyroidism, it is the moment to start the therapy.

Do you have any symptom suggestive of hypothyroidism? Apart numbness do you have other symptoms? These details are important to understand better you actual situation and to answer your question.

As I said earlier, I suggest to talk with a neurologist about the MRI result and other possible tests you may need to do to reach the right diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query.

Thank you.
