What Could Cause Persistent And Severe Pain In The Right Kidney Area Despite Normal Test Results Which Vanished Overnight After Taking An Ibuprofen?

Question: I had severe pain in my right kidney area that moved thru my lower right side. The pain was server enough for me to go to my local hospital emergency room. After a 16 hr stay complete with blood work, urine test, & CT Scan they determined that I did not have any issues with my kidneys, gallbladder, or appendix. The CT scan did however show that I had a small area in my small intestine that could have been obstructed. So they went with that. Even though I had absolutely no nausea nor had I thrown up. I had no fever and pain was managed very well with morphine. After a few hours with a tube in my stomach (horrifying experience) and only clear stuff coming out. I was allowed to eat and drink a small amount and showed after some time that I did not have any issues with the so called intestine obstruction. The pain was pretty much gone at this point so they released me from the hospital citing that they believed it to be muscular or a nerve issue. Late that evening the pain slowly returned to the level of the night before. So, I took 600 mg's of Ibuprofen, placed a heating pad (with timer) on my side, got under the covers in my bed around 8pm and fell asleep. I was awoke by my wife at 5am because she felt me and I was soaked with sweat. When I say I was soaked I mean I was soaked to the degree of running 6 miles or someone pouring two buckets of water over my entire body! This to my disbelief has cured my pain completely. I am righting this 9 hours after awaking this morning full of sweat still with no pain! Can you please give me some sort of idea why this happen to me? Thank you

Please do help me with a little more information so I can better help you

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I have gone through your query and would like you to know that I am here to help. If you do not mind answering a few questions of mine, things would become a little more clear for me, although your explanation is quite elaborate, there are a few things you might not have felt were important enough to mention, but those might be key points in indicating the cause for your presentation. I thank you in advance for your co-operation:

1. Were you given intravenous fluids during your hospital stay?
2. How would you say would have been your liquid intake prior to this incident, on an average how many liters of fluid do you normally consume in a day?
3. Prior to the insertion of the stomach tube, how many hours ago had you passed your bowels?
4. Had you taken any medications prior to the initiation of the pain in the right kidney area?

Thank you for your response. I shall await your reply.

Yes I was given an IV, for approximately 15 hours. However, can not say how much was pushed in me.
I normally consume approximately 3 to 4 litters of liquids a day. No soda. I have about 1.5 liter of green tea daily along with .5 liter of water mixed with Dr Gundry's prebiotic and .5 liter of water mixed with Dr Gundry's Vital Reds Polyphenol Blend. The rest would be straight water.
Prior to the stomach tube it had been 23 hours since a bowel movement.
I had not taken any medication prior to the pain. The last medication I consumed was about 9 hours prior to pain. Which was my blood pressure pill 20mg of Lisinoprel.

Thank you look forward to your reply

Brief Answer:
Suspecting it was something to do with your kidneys

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Here is probably what happened (I would like to emphasize on the 'probably' because I am only answering your question based on the information you have provided me with, being a doctor, providing answers to such queries requires a much more elaborate view on the patients profile, including all the investigation reports, and as I am without that, I can only answer your query based on all the information I have at hand, I hope you understand my position as well, thank you for the same):

-Although the blood work and CT scan showed a normally functioning kidney (sometimes a borderline or normally functioning kidney according to blood reports can still have some abnormalities). I am suspecting that the fluid pushed through your body might have helped normalize your kidneys.

-The most probable reason why you woke up sweating/drenched in your sweat could be because of 2 coupled reasons in my opinion:

1. The fluids that were given to you at the hospital would have resulted in a good hydration level

2. The Ibuprofen 600 mg does have a less common side effect of sweating

The sweating would along with the pain gone could be a sign of your kidneys functioning well now, and thus the paid has also subsided. But I would also like to emphasize on the fact that this could return, and if it does, we need to go ahead with a more elaborate investigation of your kidneys. For now, stay well hydrated, and try to avoid medications unless completely necessary.

Hope I have answered your query.
