Dandruff is usually caused by something called seborrheic dermatitis. The cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown, but individuals may find different circumstances, such as stress and diet, may have an effect.
Treatment for seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp is to wash the scalp with a shampoo product that either contains selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithione. Alternating between these every couple of weeks can be helpful. Products that contain these include Selsun Blue and Head And Shoulders shampoos.
If that doesn't work, you can try a shampoo with coal tar such as T-gel shampoo. This is sometimes not a good idea in people who have light hair color as it can stain the hair.
If that doesn't work, it's time to talk with your doctor about a prescription shampoo such as Ketoconazole. If there is a lot of inflammation and itching, the Ketoconazole can be combined with a topical steroid.
If you like to go the natural route, you can add a few drops of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo. Know that tea tree oil has a strong scent so start with just one drop and see how you like it.
