Posted on Mon, 27 Nov 2017
Question: the meanings of BBS and ETCO2 on an anesthesia record and is it normal to just have propofol and no pain meds for colonoscopy. I'm a little uncomfortable reading that I tolerated a procedure when I thought I was out

Brief Answer:
These are abbreviations used in anesthesia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

BBS== Barbiturate-used to calm you down
ETCO2==End tidal carbon dioxide - Monitoring parameter.

Tolerated is the standard term used anesthesia and means all went as expected. It has no negative connotation attached to it.

I hope this clarifies your doubts. I wish you well.

Thank you for your response and can you please answer my question about propofol without pain medication in regards to colonoscopy.

One more if you please? On the anesthesia record there's a listing for eye care, under it a circled T is written in. Please explain

Brief Answer:
I am convinced all was okay!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am not exactly sure what T means but there is nothing to suggest that you had any complications. Propofol alone is the standard as this procedure is not painful. The problem is discomfort and that is addressed using sedation with propofol and other sedatives.

I hope this addresses your worries. Please, stop being too worried about this procedure as there are not reflags as of now.

I wish you well.

I thank you for your response and you have convinced me that I will never do this again in the future because I can't get a straight answer. I am not worried but I feel I have a right to understand what I went through, aware or not. The procedure is indeed painful to those who have woken up in the middle. I did not wake up and thank god I didn't as I was not given pain medication. In fact my anesthesia record indicates GEN rather than MAC. They were informed I am a smoker with asthma and sleep apnea. Propofol by itself leads to over sedation. I understand if you are not an anesthesiologist.

You are welcome!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your words.

As concerns T, that’s not a universal abbreviation and I cannot weigh in on something that it’s not certain.

Reviewing all the information that you have provided, I am confident all went well. if you need specifics as much as possible, probably only the anesthetist who watched you through this can talk fully.

I hope this helps. I wish you well.

Yes after sending this freak-out message, the anesthesiologist called to check in. She did General Anesthesia, eyes were taped, hence the T. The vent was spontaneous ventilator. All did go well, for ME it was painless. I think I let my imagination run wild however, with all the horror stories I had read and just imagining myself writhing on the gurney, when actually I felt nothing. Also got pathology report on polyps removed, hypoplastic I believe was the word used. So thank you seriously, for your time.
