Question: My wife has had a sore throat for the past couple of day. This morning after showing she all of the sudden had to lay down complaining of dizziness and nausea. I helped her back to bed and she threw up in a bucket and laid back down. When I went back to check on her she could remember what had happened. We just got back from Mexico a week ago where she had mild diarrhea and vomiting one evening. A few years ago she would occasionally have dizzy spells and after laying down they would go away. What do I need to do?

Brief Answer:
Sore throat, dizziness, preceding diarrhea one week back

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

If there is sore throat , associated with painful swallowing , fever, nausea and/or dizziness/ vertigo then an infectious cause suggesting an upper respiratory tract infection is likely.

The throat needs to be examined and fever should be recorded. If there is clear evidence such as follicular tonsillitis or pharyngitis then throat swab for culture sensitivity testing should be taken and empirical antibiotics should be initiated till the culture results are available.

As part of the assessment, a neurological exam should be done, Blood pressure and blood sugar should be checked. With the history of travel and preceding diarrhea, serum electrolytes including a basic metabolic panel should also be done, in consultation with your doctor. You may apprise him about the above points.

Wishing you best of health
