Posted on Mon, 15 Jun 2015
Question: I'm a 35 year old female. I was sick And took amoxicillin for ten days starting on April 23rd. I missed my period in May which usually comes the first week of the month. I took a pregnancy test on May 16th with negative results. I'm am now experiencing bleeding during and after sex. There is no pain during sex either. I figured the late period was due to the antibiotics. But know I'm not sure why I'm bleeding, and late.
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Periods normally get delayed due to following causes...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

1. You are saying not to have your periods on early May (which was your due date in fact).

2. Now, you are experiencing bleeding during and after sex. If the bleeding only during/after sex or the bleeding persists?

If it is persisting, then, possibly the bleeding is due to your late periods.

3. There is nothing worrisome if your periods are late. There are many factors contributing including:
- stress
- uro-genital infection
- use of any contraceptive medications
- ovary cysts (PCOS)
- metabolic diseases: thyroid, diabetes, obesity
- anemia is also to consider

Infection itself and fighting infection through antibiotics might cause light anemia that would lead to late bleeding.

Once again there is nothing worrisome here. You are having your periods, a bit late, but that is normal. If the bleeding will persist or get repeated, should consult with your gynecologist to exclude the above-mentioned problems.

Hope it was of help!

The bleeding only occurs during sex and stops shortly after. The bleeding during sex started last sunday and has happened every time since then.

Brief Answer:
Possibly due to trauma during sex;consult with gynecologist...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for your additional information.

At this point, if you bleed during sex, then, it might be due to:
- rough sex
- you do not reach orgasm when penetration occurs.

If both these are true, then, should discuss with your partner to avoid rough and dry sex, and to try to take things slowly until both of you are reaching the orgasm at the same time; and your vagina is open enough for penetration without trauma.

Otherwise, if your periods are 10 days late, then, take a pregnancy test and consult with your gynecologist for further evaluations.

All the best!
