What Do Coarsened Interstitial Markings Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: I recently had an X ray that showed coarsened interstitial markings diffuse bilateral pattern are stable. What does this mean? I had heart surgery to close an asd and had lots of fluid on my lungs, but that is all clear. I walk 3.0 miles in 45 minutes with no shortness of breath. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
No need to worry for this x ray report.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
Since you are asymptomatic, no need to worry for this x ray report.
Coarsened interstitial markings bilateral can be seen in
1. In normal person if chest x ray is taken in expiratory phase.
2. Old age
3. Acute pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs)
4. Interstitial Lung disease (ILD).
Since you are not having shortness of breath, ILD and acute pulmonary edema are unlikely.
So your chest x ray must be taken in expiratory phase.
So no need to worry for this x ray.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

I got the follow up report from 2nd X ray. Here is what it said...heart with normal limits trachea is midline lungs are negative for consolidation or pleural effusion. There is no pneumothorax. There was no mention of the coarsened interstitial markings diffuse bilateral patterns are stable. The report said he compared today's X ray to the one that had reported that finding. Why no mention today?

Brief Answer:
It must be not there in your x ray.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
In my opinion your recent x ray might not be showing coarsened interstitial markings. Because he has compared this x ray with the previous one. So coarsened interstitial markings must be absent in present x ray.
Have you took full deep inhalation before recent x ray?
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
