What Do Imbalance And Neck Indicate After A Fall?
Question: I’m still having problems woth balance when walking. Some muscular pain in my neck relieved by heat is this to be expected after my fall. MRI scheduled next week.
Brief Answer:
Some symptoms possible.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thank you for the update.
Some pain is to be expected, if you go back to our last conversation (19 days ago) I said that symptoms due to muscle spasms and inflammation may take 3-6 weeks while if there is additional spinal injury may take months. So some symptoms are possible, the important thing is that the intensity is diminishing, if decreasing, albeit slowly it is a positive indication.
Of course the MRI will give a more subjective indication on whether there is any additional damage to the spine apart from the muscular issues.
I hope you'll feel better soon.

What about the balance issue? How long generally does it take for it to improve? And should I push myself to exercise or do PT? I’ve been fairly sedentary. Thanks
Brief Answer:
Read below.
Detailed Answer:
The balance issue goes side by side with the rest. If it is due to muscle spasms and compression of upper cervical nerves (which are involved in balance) it should improve as local muscle changes subside. Otherwise if due to cord damage it would take longer.
I think you should do physical therapy. While you should avoid lifting weights and heavy exertion, some mild to moderate intensity exercise is fine.
Let me know if I can further assist you.
