What Do My HIV Test Results Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: Please, I need your advice on my situation; Please read carefully.
I had many, many unprotected sex with womens. Im a straight man.
Around 15 months ago I did a routine health check and HIV test and this results came out;
1) Routine Screening HIV test ; August 06, 2014 – ICMA HIV Test Repeatedly Reactive >1.45: then, they reflex to a supplemental test with the same blood sample. Te test was an HIV 1 and 2 Differentiation Test for confirmation (Results were HIV 1 Non-Reactive and HIV 2 Non-Reactive): The results were giving to me via phone since I was out of the USA at that time. The lab recommendation was for me to get an RNA test on a new specimen. Since I was out of the country I couldn’t find a place to do this RNA test, so I went to a private Lab in the country I was and they performed the following test;

2) Aug 14, 2014 (8 days after first POS test) : COBAS E-411 ECLIA: NEGATIVE (they performed the test twice with the same blood sample just to make sure). The Lady at the lab told me that this was a 4th Generation Test (test for Abs and Antigens), but I don’t have a way to confirmed since the results document only says “HIV COBAS E-411 ECLIA: NEGATIVE”

Then, back in the USA, I performed the following HIV tests;
3) Oct 15, 2014 (70 days after first POS test): I went again and did the same original test (same lab but different state): HIV 1/O/2 Abs-ICMA; Non-Reactive
4) Oct 15, 2014 (70 days after first POS test): With the Same blood Sample above I requested a 4th Generation HIV test: Non-Reactive
5) Dec 18, 2014 (126 days after first POS tes): I request a RT PCR RNA Test and the result was Negative <20copies/ml

6) XXXXXXX 08, 2015 (147 days after first POS test): I went and bought an In Home Oraquick HIV Test and was Negative (only a C line visible)
7) XXXXXXX 09, 2015 (148 days after first POS test): I went and bought an In Home Oraquick HIV Test and was Negative (only a C line visible)
8) XXXXXXX 18, 2015 (157 days after first POS test): I went and bought an In Home Oraquick HIV Test and was Negative (only a C line visible)
9) Apr 16, 2015 (247 days after first POS test): I went and bought an In Home Oraquick HIV Test and was Negative (only a C line visible)
10) Jun 26, 2015 (303 days after first POS test) I went and get an ELISA HIV Blood test HIV1/O/2. Result was NEGATIVE
My questions are the following;

1) Does my first test was a false positive?
2) Can I trust my later Negative Results?
3) I had painful lymph nodes under my neck for 6 months.
4) Should I take the last tests (after the first positive) as Conclusive Negative?
5) Does the RNA test <20 copies is a good test?
6) Can I still be infected even after all the negative tests?

Brief Answer:
You can trust the negative result and consider it as reliable and accurate.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

Welcome to HCM.

The first positive test is mostly due to technical or instrumental error or it might be false negative as when they repeated the supplemental test with the same blood sample that was negative.

You can definitely trust the all other negative result because even after 303 days of exposure it is also negative so they are highly reliable and conclusive.

The painful lymph nodes under the neck are due to some other infection for which consult your local physician and go for some investigations to isolate the cause and take treatment as per advice.

The RNA test detecting < 20 copies is considered highly reliable and there is not any possibility of getting an infection after all these negative results. So don't worry at all as you are free from HIV.

Thank You

ok. why the first positive??? What causes that? I know feel great but still afraid. I remember that before the positive test I got food posining in a third world country and my EOS levels were high (normal 5% and they were at 7%), this has anything to do?

Brief Answer:
The positive result is mostly due to technical or instrumental error.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

The positive result is mostly due to some technical or instrumental error nothing else because another supplemental test with same blood sample was negative at same lab so don't be so anxious and don't get afraid because you are risk free.

Brief Answer:
All the tests you had mentioned are good and reliable.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

The RNA test detecting 20 copies/ml is very good and considered highly reliable as I told earlier and other two tests ora-quick saliva and Multispot HIV differentiation are also good and reliable so don't worry and avoid excessive stress or tension.
