What Do My Lab Test Reports Indicate?

Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: Hi doctor,
My husband is 49. His recent test results were normal except the following: Glucose: 232 mg/dl, C-reactive protein 8.0 mg/L, Glycated hemoglobin 9.8%, SGOT (AST) 69.0 U/L, SGPT (ALT) 66.0U/L, Testosterone 147.6 ng/dl. Could it be the high blood sugar affecting the testosterone levels or the other way around? What treatment would be best? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

You husband has uncontrolled Diabetes.A number of Glycated Hemoglobin of 9.8% is very high and indicate that the level of blood sugar in at least last three moths was very high.
There is a known link between diabetes and low testosterone level but it is still unclear if diabetes causes low testosterone, the other way around or both of them are caused from other factors like sedentary lifestyle, being overweight etc.
The liver enzymes , SGPT and SGOT are slightly elevated. He may need to do an ultrasound of liver.

Your husband need to see a doctor as soon as possible. Most likely his doctor will refer him to an Endocrinologist for the management of Diabetes.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any question.

Thank you doctor. This is the first time that high blood sugar has been detected in my husband. He has had no obvious symptoms of diabetes so far, but he is indeed a bit overweight and his lifestyle is sedentary. Is it necessary for him to take diabetes drugs right away in order to control the condition, or maybe being more active, losing weight and taking herbs and/or natural supplements could also work?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
he need treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

The numbers of blood sugar and HbA1c are very high and he need to start a treatment to lower the level of blood sugar in blood.
Diet changes and lifestyle modification (losing weight, regular physical activity ) are essential in controlling levels of blood sugar but he need treatment.

He should consult a endocrinologist as soon as possible.
Take care.
