Question: Hello,

I have pain in my breast and right arm with numbness. I went to the dr. and had a mammogram and an ultrasound to find a 5mm cyst that my dr. doesn't think is any concern. How do I get this biopsied? Do they do biopsies of cysts this small? I living in a socialist healthcare system where this is difficult and one of my friends died from a cyst that they thought was nothing.

Brief Answer:
Cyst very small to be biopsied

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.

Cyst in the breast can be due to various causes like ductal ectasia, fibroadenoma, or rarely breast carcinoma. If in the ultrasound or mammogram, it appears to be a simple cyst without any calcification or nodules, then there is nothing to worry. Moreover, a cyst of 5 mm is unlikely to be malignant.

If any of these suspicious findings are there, then you should consult a surgeon for proper examination and treatment accordingly. Yes, biopsy is difficult in a cyst of size 5 mm.

In the nutshell, I will not be overly worried about a 5mm cyst if there is no calcification or nodules. You can discuss about these with your treating doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Brief Answer:
Very difficult

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
It is very difficult to biopsy a cyst of such a small size. Most surgeons will not attempt the biopsy of such a small cyst in the breast.
