What Do My Results For TPHA Mean?
Question: Hi Doctor,
I received my tests results for TPHA and it shows <1:80. I know in this forum a similar question was answered before and it was non-reactive if it showed <1:80. I just wanted to double check and see if that is the case.
Previously when I got a test done for TPHA it said Non - reactive qualitative but the new results show <1:80 quantitative.
What does this specifically mean and why the qualitative vs. quantitative testing?
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Non reactive for Syphilis organism
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
If the results are less than 1:80 dilution it is non reactive for the antibody of the Treponema pallidum (syphilis).
TPHA works on passive aggluttination reaction. These are both qualitative and quantitative tests. Qualitative tests say whether there is any antibody or antigen or not. whereas Quantitative test say the measure of antibody. They do serial dilutions to test for the agglutination reaction. If there is a reaction it can be visually seen on the microplate well.
Since there is no antibody on screening itself (qualitative) they would not go further in measuring the level of antibody.
