What Do Recurring Urine Infection And Fever In A Child Indicate?
Question: My girl is 4 years and 10 months old, 19 kg. she has had urine infection about 4 times last year. We thought because she was still using diapers, once she stopped using diapers she has been ok for the last few months. Yesterday she wake up with a fever and complaining about pain in her tummy. We went to the emergency room and she had a urine test. The results were as follows: PH=8, sp gravity 1.015, erythrocytes +, RBC 6-8, MUCUS ++ , WBC 2-4.
she has been drinking 5 or 6 servings or more of Cimilac gain plus 4 formula milk per day.could that damage her kidney ? Or what is the problem?

Brief Answer:
Structural abnormalities could be the root of the problems
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I do not think that the problem is due to her taking Similar Gain Plus 4 and it is unlikely to damage her kidneys. However, let me mention that a child of this age can practically be transitioned to an adult diet low on spices, and does not need to be given formula feeds.
About the recurrent urinary tract infection, structural abnormalities need to be excluded first since such aberrations if pesent, are likely to predispose to infections. I would suggest you to get a DMSA scan done.
Hope that helps.

But could having too much powdered milk cause kidney stones to form from extra calcuim? And suppose that the scan was ok, what else could you suggest us to do, or not do
Brief Answer:
You should proceed step by step towards the diagnosis
Detailed Answer:
I do not think that excess calcium due to powder milk would really be a factor although calcium stones are occasionally seen. If the scan is ok, I would simply assign it to hygiene. But I think that the scan may have something to reveal.

We noticed that whenever she takes swimming lessons she gets urine infction, could there be a relation?
Brief Answer:
There is a possible relation
Detailed Answer:
There is indeed a vague possibility of the infection coming from contaminated water especially since the urethra in girls is relatively small in size. So the possibility cannot be ruled out.
