Question: Hello Doctor,

My uncle is 46 years of age, non-smoker. From 4 days , he is having pain on his right side of chest(lungs area). The pain is so much that it is difficult for him to breathe, swallow food and talk. He was admitted to hospital 4 days ago. Doctors did a CT scan of his lungs area.

I am attaching the report here.

Is the situation too serious?

Brief Answer:
He needs to undergo detail investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

The CT report of your uncle says that there is problem with his lower lobe of rt lung. The lower lobe is collapsed and there is some fluid collection in the outer covering of the lung.

There can be many causes for such a situation which need to be investigated. The commonest causes are infection or a growth(mass) obstructing the rt lower lobe bronchus.

He needs detail investigations in the form of bronchoscopy and bronchoscopic lavage /biopsy, pleural fluid tapping and examination of fluid etc etc.

I suggest you consult your local pulmonologist for all these sothat correct investigations and treatment is initiated asap.

Dear Doctor,

Thank you for your detailed answer.

We are totally disturbed as the local hospital's doctor doubted that there might be a "tumour' in it.

What are the chances for it based on the report?

And what are the things we can do to reduce the pain which is being caused as discussed in my question above?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Yes the possibility of tumour is there.

Detailed Answer:

Yes possibility of tumour also referred as growth/mass lesion is definitely there and for that only he has to undergo bronchoscopy and other tests as mentioned above.

For pain, as of now you can give him any pain killer like voveran/nimesulide etc.

Thanks Doctor,

Sorry for a bit lay man like question. But I wanted to ask you how dangerous is a tumour in lungs. Can lung tumour be cured?

What are the best centres in XXXXXXX for treatment of such kind of disease?

Brief Answer:
Cancerous tumours are dangerous and non cancerous not so dangerous.

Detailed Answer:
Tumours can be of two types-cancerous and non cancerous. Non cancerous tumours normally do not recur after they are removed but cancerous tumours are dangerous and need to be treated aggressively. That`s why your uncle should undergo necessary investigations asap to arrive at a diagnosis

Cancer treatments are available in good tertiary care hospitals both government and private so you will have to explore a hospital in your location which is providing the treatment.
