What Do Small Red Itchy Bumps On Shin Indicate?
Question: I have small red itchy bumps on my shins. They look like peteqiae(sp?) but they are itchy--could it be an allergic reaction? It has continued for 4 days. I went to an urgent care center and the dr. on duty prescribed methylprednisolone but I would like to know the underlying cause. I'm wondering if the chlorine from my water aerobics class on Mon could be a cause or my eating coquille St Jacques on Tues. could be a cause?
Brief Answer:
acute urticaria
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query,
You might have developed acute urticaria.
It is an allergic condition.
Anything including food, cloth, change in climate, pollens etc can cause urticaria.
You need to find out the cause.
Treatment can be with oral anti histamines.
Steroids like prednisolone are also helpful but cannot be used for long.
Best thing is to notice the cause and avoid it.
You need to keep a close watch on what you eat and what you wear and try to notice if there is any relation between these and the lesions developing on your body.
Let me know if you have any other doubts.
Wishing you a good health.
Thank you

I suspect you are right but if so, and I am having a reaction to something I ate--probably shellfish--how long can I expect it to last?
Thanks--

Brief Answer:
shellfish is the cause
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Shellfish is one of the biggest cause of urticaria.
One episode subsides within a week but later you need to be cautious and better avoid shellfish.
Let me know if you have any other doubts.
Thank you
