Brief Answer:
Viral fever versus dengue fever.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
These days fever with low platelet count is on hike. In most instances it is dengue or viral fever.
Platelet count can fall in both viral and dengue.
So your doctor would investigate him for Dengue, Typhoid fever. If the reports are negative we would consider this as viral fever and wait.
Platelet count usually fall after 3-4 days of fever and continues to fall fall up to 7-8th day of fever. A person become asymptomatic and has no fever or any issues. He just feels week and the platelet counts drops.
After the cycle of virus is over the platelet start rising. This is usually seen after 7-8th day of fever.
So your father might not be having any symptoms of dengue but the treatment protocol of dengue would be followed as his platelet count is on fall.
The treatment of viral or dengue fever is symptomatic.
Monitoring of platelet count is done and if platelet count falls to less 10,000 then we go for transfusion or if a person has any bleeding we consider transfusion.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
