What Do These Blood Sugar Levels During Pregnancy Indicate?

Question: Hi Doctor,
My wife is approx 33 weeks pregnant and is not taking sugar as she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Her latest report is attached. Please check and advise if the results are ok? As of now she is not taking any medicine for this disbetes.
We have also visited doctor with this report and she had suggested to take Glycomet SR 500 (which contains medformin) once daily after dinner to reduce fasting sugar. Please advise if taking Glycomet SR 500 is safe for baby and mother?
Regards,

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.
We have tested her blood glucose levels at home using blood glucose testing machine and here are the readings:
on 20 Nov
Fasting - 114 after taking medformin 500 on previous night. This was the first day of taking medformin
PP - 149 after approx 1 hour of last meal
On 21 Nov
Fasting - 116 (No medformin taken on previous night as we were not sure of the side effects)
She is not taking any sugar and doing walking for 20-25 minutes after every meal.
Please advise if there is anything to worry about and what precautions shall we take further?

Brief Answer:
Continue with metformin and diet control.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The blood glucose levels in your wife's case are just borderline high. She needs to get her HbA1C and stress test of glucose done which are more diagnostic tests for gestational diabetes. Do continue taking metformin as prescribed. In addition to it, proper dist control is also necessary.
Diet control with LOW GLYCEMIC foods are mostly preferred. Her daily diet would be 50% vegetables and fruits. I would give lists of fruits and vegetables which can be taken to reduce blood sugar.
FRUITS: Lemon, Blackberries, Mandarin oranges, Nectarine, Raspberries, Orange, Strawberries, Pear, Honeydew melon, Plum, Cherries, Pomegranate, etc. Basically all sour fruits are quite useful in controlling blood sugar. But, it will be taken in adequate amount and not too much.
VEGETABLES: Artichoke, Leeks, Lettuces, Mushrooms, Avocado, Okra, Beans, Onions, Olives, Bean sprouts, Peas, Broccoli, Radishes, Brussels sprouts, Sauerkraut, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Spinach, Collard greens, Eggplant, Endive, Tomatoes, Escarole, Turnip greens, Bell peppers, Water chestnuts, Watercress, Zucchini etc.
OTHER FOODS: 100% whole grain cereals like Oatmeal, Barley, Rye etc; 100% whole wheat floor; Nut and seed milk, seeds, egg, fish, salad, soy beans etc
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
She is diabetic.
Detailed Answer:
I have seen the reports. Both the reports suggest that she is diabetic and needs a treatment. Do take metformin regularly and go for regular blood glucose levels monitoring.
