What Do White Spots On The Face Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Apr 2017
Question: Recently white spots are developed on my face. They are quite large in size and visible. Can you tell me why is this exactly happening and what is this?

The skin of the white spots are really dry. These white spots are developed only on face and not on the other parts of the body.

Brief Answer:
Pityriasis XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist).
I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

The characteristic dry white patches on face are usually those of pityriasis XXXXXXX which presents as ill defined, light colored patches most commonly on the sides of cheeks and on lower face in patients who have an underlying dry skin and/or are using harsh soaps like dettol etc.

I suggest you to use a gentle cleanser e.g cetaphil gentle cleansing lotion, for face wash, twice daily. Avoid soaps. Also use a daily moisturiser if your face skin is dry.

Specifically for the light colored patches you may use tacrolimus ointment (tacroz forte 0.1% ointment), twice daily. Rub it in. use it for 4-6 weeks

Dear Dr. Kakkar,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I just visited a dermatologist just after posting the question and he said may be its due to sun.

He said it's Sun burn type and he gave me the below mentioned medicines.

Aveil SPF50
Fluticasone Cream I.P.

But I think it's not due to Sun. I'm bit unsure.

Can you tell whether I should use these creams or not?

Also please tell me how can I remove those white patches. It looks very odd on my face.

And can u tell me is this vitiligo?

Brief Answer:
Pityriasis XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi. Thank you.

These hypopigmanted patches are clearly Pityriasis XXXXXXX
This is not due to sun and it is not vitiligo. Pityriasis XXXXXXX is common in those who have a dry skin of face. Using soaps and washing frequently aggravates the condition.
I suggest you to use a gentle cleanser e.g Cetaphil cleansing lotion. Avoid soaps on face. Use a moisturiser e.g Cetaphil moisturising cream or Physiogel cream for face, once or twice daily. Apply tacroz forte 0.1% ointment, twice daily over these whitish patches and gently rub it in.

Regards
