Question: My friend started a cold 10 days ago and developed fever for 4 days. On 4th day of fever, blood tests were done and IgG dengue was 46.9 and IgM was 3.3. Platelet count was 223000. How to interpret these results? Does my friend have dengue now?

Brief Answer:
No, he does not have dengue now.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Jyothi BL and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. IgM levels indicate recent infection, however, the values are less indicating a probable recent infection in the past 2-3 months.

2. Ig G levels start increasing after 2 weeks of infection. More IgG levels indicate past infection. Usually a IgM/IgG ratio is used to detect recent or old infection. If it is more than 1.2, then it is recent infection.

3. At present, it appears to be a possible old infection. At present your friend is possibly dengue negative. Viral culture only can confirm the diagnosis. Based on serology, he had an earlier infection to dengue or a similar virus.

4. Platelet count is good. Usually platelet count falls severely in dengue. It is probably not dengue.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
