Question: I'm having pain in my back neck. i met a doctor he said a surgery needs to be done to remove a block near spinal cord.
The scan report says : Intradural extrameduallry nerve sheath tumor most probably arising from right lateral aspect of C1 to C3 cervical spinal cord with compression and displacement of cervical spinal cord to the left side and mild post compressive myelopathic changes.
OTHER POSSIBILITIES - ??
Epidermoid
Please advice do i have to go for the surgery or can be sorted by tablets

Hi XXXX
Thank you for posting your query.
I have noted your symptoms and MRI spine findings.
I agree with your doctor that a surgery should be done. This would relieve the compression from the spinal cord, and we would also be able to confirm the diagnosis, as the removed tissue would be sent for biopsy.
This problem can not be treated with medications.
The likely causes of the tumor are nerve sheath tumours such as neurofibroma or schwannoma, and epidermoid cyst. All these are benign tumours (not cancers) and would get fully cured with surgery.
I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Thank you Doctor for your kind reply.
I have one quick question.
How will i know weather this tissue is removed completely from my spinal cord
& are there any chance of regrowth of the same tissue.
If possible can you tell me the cost for doing it in your / your recommended hospitals
thanks in advance.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.
1. The neurosurgeon would be able to tell whether he was able to remove the entire tissue or not, after the operation. The same can be confirmed by doing a repeat MRI scan after the operation.
2. The tissue can regrow if a part of it was left during operation or if it was cancer (the chances of that are very low in your case).
3. The cost varies, but it may range from 1.5 lakhs to 2.5 lakhs rupees.
Best wishes,
