Question: My wife has a blood pressure reading of 113/50. She has had low readings for a few days now but not as low as today. She is 85 and otherwise healthy. How concerned should we be?

Brief Answer:
Normal systolic and mildly low diastolic.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting query onnHealthcareMagic.

Diastolic pressure, the force exerted when the heart is at rest, The majority of your arteries are fed during systole. But coronary arteries surrounding the aortic valve, get blood only when the aortic valve closes which happens in diastole. So if you have a low diastolic pressure, it means you have a low coronary artery pressure, and that means your heart is going to lack blood and oxygen. That is what we call ischemia, and that kind of chronic, low-level ischemia may weaken the heart over time and potentially lead to heart failure.

A normal diastolic blood pressure range is from 60 to 80 mm of hg at a age of 85 but 50 mm is a bit on lower side.
There is no need to panic but keep a watch on her blood pressure for next 2weeks.
Increase salt in her diet and follow up after 2 weeks.

Systolic b.p is normal.

Thank you.
