What Does A BP Reading Of 135/94 Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: Hi,

My blood pressure reading today was 135/94 on my home monitor. I have "unexplained" nerve damage in my legs which has now seemingly spread to my hands and feet. I was wondering if you had a clue to what could possibly be going? No doctor will help me, I've seen 5 and they all told me to take advil. Please help.

Brief Answer:
peripheral neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Numbness, tingling and other abnormal sensations are commonly due to peripheral neuropathy.

This is abnormal function or damage to the nerves in the periphery (outside of the brain and spinal cord).

In some cases the cause of peripheral neuropathy cannot be found but in other cases it may be related to : (a) low vitamin b12 or folate levels

(b)diabetes

(c)liver or kidney disease

(d)side effect of medication

(e)infections such as shingles, hiv

(f)autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, sjogren or lupus

(g)exposure to toxins

(h)neurological conditions such as ms

(i)trauma- compression or injury along the path of the nerves eg back injury

(J)alcohol use

(k)cancers

(l)hormonal conditions such as low thyroid hormone

High blood pressure is not a common cause.

It may be best to consider seeing a neurologist for assessment

He or she should thoroughly examine and investigate you.

Investigations should include blood tests for - vitamin levels, diabetes screening, checking liver and kidney, checking for infections, thyroid hormone levels, screening for autoimmune disease

Imaging such as x ray of the spine may also be needed as well to determine the cause.

Treatment would depend somewhat on the findings but there are medications that can be used to relieve nerve related sensations such as tegretol, amitriptyline, gabapentin, lyrica, cymbalta

Though these medications are originally for persons with depression or seizures, they are very commonly used for nerve related conditions in persons who DO NOT have depression or seizures

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
