What Does A PSA Level Of 5.1 Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 Dec 2016
Question: I am 72 & have been biopsied, probed & Psa'd to death & nothing has been found, but a once slightly elevated 5.1 Psa that fluctuates between 4 & 5.1... on a yearly visit, the PSA was 5 again & now without having BPH or any symptoms of urinary problems, doc wants to try to lower a number on a lab result with finasteride . I take lisinoril qd & metoprolol 50mg 2x/day for BP. I'd rather try a saw palmetto pill first. What do you think. I don't want to be interferring with my hormonal levels with prescription meds

Brief Answer:
Need for Finasteride is low.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir.

In presence of normal biopsy with near normal PSA levels and absent symptoms of BPH, the need for Finasteride is less.

Hence you can try non pharmacology measures like Saw palmetto.

I totally agree with you. But it's important to get an ultrasound Abdomen and Pelvis to track the size/ volume of prostate gland.

Lisininopril and Metoprolol should be continued as they are prescribed.

Post your further queries if any.

Thank You
