What Does A Dark Itchy Dot On Thigh Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 11 Jul 2014
Question: Dear Doctor, about a year ago, I small dark itchy dot appeared on my left outer thigh, close to the hip. Though it itched occasionally, I didn't give it much attention apart from applying some clotrimazole ointment occasionally. Now it has grown into a fairly large patch (the size of a closed fist) and itches fairly frequently. Another patch has started appearing on the right outer thigh as well. It just seems dry and itchy, and it grows. No discharge or noticeable redness. I am attaching photos of the problem for your kind observation. Thank you for the help. I'm clean, monogamous; no habits of any kind.

Brief Answer:
Certainly appears to be fungal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This is Dr. Sridhar and I shall be answering your question.

Thank you for sharing the images. Well, it certainly appears like a fungal infection to me.
Fungal infections are known to occur commonly in the areas such as groins, scrotum and thighs.

First of all, I want you to know the factors which are related to this and cause fungal infections. Hygiene remains one of the most important causative factor.
Also, the immunity of the person plays a great role.

Now let me suggest you how to go about with it now. Since clotrimazole ointment has not been very effective, you will benefit with oral antifungal agents. However before starting oral drugs, I'd suggest you to visit a dermatologist who can perform few tests to confirm the diagnosis. If needed a test to select the most sensitive antifungal drugs would be done.

Simultaneously, you must take a good nutritious diet to help your body fight the infection. Your diet must consist of eggs, meat, soyabean and green leafy vegetables. These will provide proteins to your body to help increase your immunity.
Also, keep your affected area clean and dry. In fact don't apply soap to that part. Ensure it remains dry all the time. You may also be given an antifungal dusting powder.

Now, I must tell you certain measure to help prevent any further occurrence of similar infection.

1. Keep your private parts and surrounding areas clean.
2. Change your undergarments daily.
3. Ensure your undergarments are properly washed
4. Eat a nutritious diet. (foods have been mentioned above)

These few simple ways will help you prevent infection in the future.

Hope I've solved your query. If you have any doubt, feel free to ask.
If you are satisfied, you may close the discussion and rate my answer.

Wish you good health.

With regards,
Dr. Sridhar
