What Does A Delay In Periods After Discontinuing Hormone Pills Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Apr 2017
Question: Hi,
I have problems with my menstrual cycle. In December 2015 I had one emergency contraceptive. Since then I had irregular periods which I know was due to contraceptive. I asked a gynae near my home and she prescribed me "Norethisterone" . This drug works good if I take it regularly for one week and stop it. Then I receive periods normally. But in last December, I had thick brown flow instead of blood. I decided I wont take pill anymore and let my cycle return to regular naturally. I didn't receive any periods since then. Is the decision taken by me good or not?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to polycystic ovaries.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The delay in periods since december can be due to a hormonal imbalance or polycystic ovaries. Since it has been three months with no periods This needs proper investigations to find the cause. Taking Norethisterone will help in bringing back the periods but the hormonal imbalance needs to be corrected with proper hormonal treatment to get regular cycles. You need to consult a gynecologist for proper investigations.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Hello Doctor,
Thank you for quick response. So do you suggest I should continue taking the medicine? Will it help me gaining my normal cycle? Also, please let me know other symptoms of polycystic ovaries.

Brief Answer:
Do take it once.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You should take medicine only once now to get the periods and then get proper investigations done to get specific treatment. PCOD is an endocrine condition in which there is high LH/FSH ratio, increased androgen production and high oestrone levels. It is usually associated with abnormal hair growth , obesity , menstrual disturbances and infertility.
Hope my answer is helpful.
