Question: What is sardine surgery? What does a failed DPOAE test mean? Can the presence of ear tubes cause a false DPOAE test? Does this mean my child is deaf?

I requestd an ENT answer this question

Brief Answer:
Failed OAE is known with ear ventilation tubes. Do not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. There is no such thing known as 'sardine' surgery. I is an auto-correct spelling check error while typing.

2. The DPOAE (Distortion Product Oto-Acoustic Emission) test is only one of the tests to check hearing in very young children. A single test report is never relied upon and it is repeated if it shows a failed test. In fact, printouts of the OAE usually mention 'refer' in stead of 'fail'.

3. OAE test results may fail after ear ventilation tube insertion. This may be because of persistent middle ear pathology or a blocked ventilation tube.

4. Ear ventilation tube placement is usually a safe surgery and the chance of nerve deafness is miniscule (though theoretically possible) as with all ear surgery and procedures.

5. Other tests such as Behavioral Audiometry and BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry also known as ABR- Auditory Brainstem Response) can be done is any nerve damage is suspected.

6. Upload these test results for further discussion.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Thank you Doctor,

Can you tell me what middle ear pathologies are likely? How likely is it that this is a sarcoma?

Brief Answer:
OME. Sarcomas are extremely rare.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The most common middle ear pathology is OME (Otitis Media with Effusion). Rule out adenoid enlargement.

2. Ear sarcomas are very rare. The chances are almost nil. This will not get missed on examination and imaging.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
