What Does A Large Purple Spot In The Mouth Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Aug 2017
Question: I just noticed a large, strange purple spot in my mouth (where a left, bottom wisdom tooth might have been) that I have never had before. It appears raised and is mildly aching. I have a picture, but I am not sure how to attach it here.

I am noticing this after some other strange symptoms like a tender left temple area to the touch (that has since subsided) and sore neck when bending the head backwards along with fatigue and night sweats. Perhaps if this additional with those other symptoms could point to something else? Or maybe these are unrelated (I was told last week that I may have a light viral infection), but I just want to know if I should get this spot in my mouth checked out? By a primary care doctor? Or my dentist?

Brief Answer:
Please upload a clear picture...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query...

The purple spot can be a Hematoma or other causes...
But to guide you better I would request you to upload a clear picture of the bump.

You will find an option to upload files/ images on this discussion page only(Reports section), you can click on it and upload pictures, alternatively, you can also e-mail them to YYYY@YYYY by keeping the Subject as ATTN:Dr Honey Arora, and I'll receive them...

Also, please let me know since you've mentioned it is at the site where lower wisdom tooth could have been, so did the wisdom tooth has not yet erupted or have you got it extracted?

-Since how many days it is present?

-Did you notice any change in its size, like it grew more or reduced?

Please revert back with these details...

Awaiting...
Regards.

Yes, I have now uploaded a picture. I just noticed it today (I likely would have noticed it flossing last night). It does appear where the wisdom could have been, but I had them surgically removed about 12 years ago. Thank you for you help.

Brief Answer:
Looks like Hematoma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
I have evaluated the image and it looks like Hematoma only...

It might be due to some injury that can even be due to chewing some very hard food...
It generally resolves on its own.

However if it is tender you can apply Lidocaine gel over it..
You can also do alternate warm and cool compresses over it to make it resolve faster..
Avoid chewing very hard foods..

I'd suggest to wait and watch for a week and see if it starts getting better...
If worse, not better, then please consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated...

Please revert back for more queries...

Regards..
