What Does A Reddish Mark On Lower Back Of A Child Indicate?
Question: I just noticed a reddish bruise like mark on my 5 year old child's lower back (almost heart shaped). She says it doesn't hurt. Possible causes? No chance of abuse. She doesn't remember hitting up against anything. I plan to take her in to see a dr. tomorrow.

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
A small reddish mark could be due to insect bite, fungal infection , eczema, bruising due to trivial unnoticed trauma.
It doesn't seem to be serious, so you may see your doctor tomorrow. However,I would appreciate if you could upload few pics of the lesions as that would help me in suggesting the probable diagnosis. You may do it by clicking on upload report/image icon which is on right side of query page
Hoping to hear from you soon
Take care

Thank you. I checked it again and noticed that the spot was slightly raised. She ate quite a few lychee about an hour ago. I'm guessing it could be hives from the fruit (she had reactions to pineapple when she was younger). It's not itchy or sore. I'll check again in the morning and then see about taking her into a doctor here. Thank you for your quick response.

Hi,
Thanks for writing back.
If you think that lesion could be an allergy or hives, just apply calamine lotion and a mild steroid cream(hydrocortisone). It should subside in few hours or day.
Hope this should help her.
