Thanks for writing back,

I understand your concern about this swishing sound and carotid aneurysm.

I myself am a Post Graduation Trainee in Cradiovascualar medicine( Cardiology) and i want to assure you that there is no way a wish in ear with heart beat is a carotid aneurysm.

Most of the times aneurysm just shows no symptoms and these are accidental findings during tests for other problems.

Very small number of people (like 2-3 patients in a year)complain of swish in ear after they got diagnosed with aneurysm but no body is sure if that swish is actually due to aneurysm or not because usually aneurysm can't even be heard with simple stethoscope until it's really creating turbulent blood flow.

There are certain other simple explanations to swishing sound,

Like Ear problems, sometimes wax can cause it or some ear blockage,

It just makes ear more sensitive and ear detects even a minor sound of blood flowing.

Put a hand at your carotid (not on both at the same time) and feel if there is thrill , it might be due to atherosclerosis which creates turbulence in carotid blood but even in that the swish isn't an acute symptom ,

it develops and get worsens over some years.

In my opinion , you might just be having some ear issue which is expected to get settled by itself in a couple of days or so and you shouldn't be panicking.

If you are much concerned about aneurysm just meet your cardiologist he can simple get a carotid doppler on you to see if he can suspect anything there.

Then if doppler gives some clue then other investigations can be done.

But for the time being I don't think there is anything to be anxious about. Things look fine.

Yes that sound like the best way to go,

If the problem persists , an ENT specialist would be the first choice to get a consult from.

Then you can contact your cardiologist after discussing with your ENT specialist wether he supports the idea of it being a carotid aneurysm.
