Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2020
Question: What does a thickened endometrial lining at 20mm with internal cystic spaces with vascularity indicate? I had the ultrasound performed due to bleeding straight for 6-7 weeks which was stopped with the OCP. The last 7 days of the bleeding before the OCP, I was soaking through a very thick pad every 30 min to an hour. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to ‘Ask a Doctor ‘.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns.
The upper limit of normal thickness of endometrium is 14 mms in the pre menopause women. In your case it has increased due to excessive growth of the glandular tissue of the endometrium. That is the reason for bleeding. In medical terms it is called as endometrial hyperplasia.
You need to undergo a minor surgery, ie Dilatation and curettage to scrape the endometrial lining and send it to lab for microscopic examination. Based on the report further treatment can be planned. This surgery is necessary. Otherwise you may start bleeding again.
If you have further concerns, do write to me.
Best wishes.
