What Does Absence Of Fetal Heartbeat At 8 Weeks Indicate?
Question: I heard a fetal heartbeat at 7 weeks 4 days. It was 144. When i went for scan at 11 weeks, doctor told me that there was no heartbeat and fetus size is around 8 weeks 4 days. It is a missed abortion. Can you please tell me the reason for this

This is indeed a missed abortion with the heart beat which was present earlier but then it stopped. This is usually seen in cases where there exists any congenital anomalies in the foetus or aneuploidies which nature finds incompatible for survival and hence the heart beat dies. This is natural and actually cannot be controlled.
Also, this doesn't mean that the next pregnancy would meet the same fate , but warrants for complete investigation in terms of karyotyping and preimplantation genetic diagnostic studies which can be undertaken before planning the next pregnancy.
