What Does An Ultrasound Showing Liver Size Of 15cm Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jul 2015
Question: Hello.
Thank you for taking the time to review my concerns.
I have been having reoccurring UTI for almost 2yrs now. Thu UTI have been occurring more frequently within the last 3 months. I have had several culture & sensitivity tests done and the result is always the same E. Coli 50000cfu/ml. I have also been experiencing other issues like constipation, low back pain (I have scoliosis), abdominal pain, not being able to eat much without having discomfort and nausea, feeling tired all the time, weak leg muscles, and most recently losing feeling in my feet, and my skin itches, but I do not have a rash.
I have had an ultrasound done and the measurements of my liver is 15cm. I read online that the average size of an adult woman's liver shoul only be 7cm. Is this correct? My family doctor has not expressed any concern about my liver. She has referred me to a urologist and my first apt is tomorrow. What should I be expecting the next steps with the urologist to be?
I know this a lot, and I thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
It is very difficult to eradicate Chronic UTI in females .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have Chronic UTI since one year and repeated urine culture has revealed E-Coli infection .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem .
1) Do you have severe pain in lower abdomen while passing urine.?
2) Have you taken appropriate antibiotics as per culture report for adequate period of time ?

UTI in females has tendency to recur with short intervals due to proximity of urethral opening close to anal opening as compared to males .This proximity of urethral passage close to anus is the prime factor for bacteria from peri anal region and perineal area to invade in urinary tract to cause UTI very frequently.

Following general measures will help to prevent frequent UTI.
1) Wash and Clean your perineal area and peri anal region with antiseptic solution every time after passing urine.
2) Avoid using common toilets, instead you can use diapers.
3) Empty your bladder at regular intervals .
4) Ensure to drink more water to keep your urine dilute .
5) Take appropriate antibiotic as per culture report followed by taking prophylactic urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily for 4-6 months.

I am sure this will work for you

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask me I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards.
