What Does Brown Vaginal Spotting After Unprotected Intercourse Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 31 Aug 2016
Question: Hi the 1st day of my period was on 1 July. I had unprotected intercourse on 8th July and took postinor 2 on 9th July (2 pills- each at 12hr interval). On 15 July, I had some spotting and very light bleeding that lasted for 3 days.

On 30th July, we had intercourse once more but with condom.

My period should come on the 1 August. But did not. On 7 August I had some brown blood spotting.. And that has been going on for 3 days now with no bleeding. Is this my period?? I have taken a home pregnancy test twice and came out negative. I want to go on my regular contraceptives but I don't know if the brown spotting is my period.. And thus I don't know if I should go ahead and start my normal monthly contraceptives. Stressed! Please help.

Brief Answer:
I will recommend that you wait and get a normal period before going on!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.

For sure you are not pregnant. Even without the emergency contraception, the date of unprotected sex was safe enough for there to be no pregnancy. However, the postinor has messed up with the cycle and makes it difficult to establish the exact date of your next periods. We can go ahead and start the pills and as such impose a new cycle rhythm which is still okay. We may choose to wait for the next nor;al periods and use that as a benchmark to start the pills. In either way, there is no problem but I would rather choose the second option, though not necessarily superior to the first. It is all a choice and non is consequential because we are sure you are not pregnant.

I hope this helps. I wish you well and feel free to follow up with me if more information and clarifications are needed. Until next, stay well.

Thank you very much for your reply.
My husband works offshore and is only home couple of months a year. And so we are sexually active. I don't want to wait another month to be on my usual contraceptives.
I think I wil go ahead and take them.. But without confirmation that the brown spotting is my period, will the contraceptives be just as effective?

Brief Answer:
Yes, would be as equally effective!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Oral contraceptives override the normal cycle. There is no fear with that as long as you are compliant to the pills as prescribed. Daily at the same time and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol. Condoms will help protect against infections.

I wish you well.
