What Does Chronic Smell From From Catheter Bag Suggest?

Question: My brother is or rather has a brain injury and is bed ridden he has a super pubic catherter that has started turning blue and has a very cronic odour permeating from it ,it is that strong it permiates through his catherter bag with in days of being changed and the new catherter starts to go blue within hours of being replace what is this and what can we do to eliminate the odour

Hello and thank you for your question.
The odor is coming from infection and the only way to eliminate that is to make sure that the infection is treated adequately. It would be good for him to see a urologist. They may need to put him on suppressive antibiotics (daily low dose) to keep the infection down if he keeps getting recurrent infections. You can certainly clean and disinfect the area but the smell is really coming from infection and that must be treated in order to finally get rid of the odors.
