What Does Clear Mucus Discharge From Anus Suggest?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: I have a clear mucus discharge from my anus with a feeling of having to go often and pain in the center of my lower abdomen. I was given a medication when I had the flu that started this but that was more than 4 months ago. I had to stop taking it. I just had a UTI for the first time last month and have trouble with antibiotics. I am active, and a caregiver for my husband full time. I do have help a few hours a day...what can this be?

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query at HCM.
I understand your concern and situation.

Firstly I would like to inform you that the current episode is completely unrelated to your previous illnesses. You seem to have developed intestinal tract infection. The other most common causes for mucus rectal discharge are benign. Anyway, serious pathology is sufficiently likely to warrant though examination. There are a few conditions that can cause rectal mucus discharge. Common are hemorrhoids, anal fissures, rectal prolepses, proctitis and perineal warts. I suggest you to get stool or mucus discharge for routine microscopy examination and culture sensitivity test for aerobic bacteria done. Also get tested for occult blood test in stool test done to rule out any intestinal bleeding. You must also visit a gastroenterologist for your examination of abdomen and prescription of antibiotics like ofloxacin, metronidazole, etc if infectious cause is found. Avoid junk food, oily spicy food. Drink plenty of fluids. If loss of fluids then take oral rehydration solution. Practice hand hygiene. Rest treatment will depend upon cause after proper evaluation by a doctor.

Take care.
Best of health.
