What Does Excessive Crying In A 5 Year Old Child Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Mar 2017
Question: This is in reference to my kid who is 5 years old. She has a habit of crying every now & then without any reasons. When asked why she is crying she will not tell and if pressed harder she would say 'she is feeling like crying'. The crying outburst happens randomly and related to questions/personal demands like why do we sleep in night/why do we need to eat food/go to school/i want to play now/want to eat noodles etc.
She is a very playful and jolly child otherwise...have a lot of imagination and very talkative and expressive...emotionally sensitive.
I am not sure if this is normal or how to get through it...

Brief Answer:
The underlying cause needs to be identified.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Incidentally, such things are sometimes found in children and there can be a number of undetected underlying causes like pain, hunger, not having the internal resources to cope with what is being asked of her, sudden memory of a vague frightening experience, inability to balance emotions, or simply inability to use the right communication tools at the right time. It needs careful observation and correlation to find out the underlying cause. I would insist you to go through:

Thank you for your response. As a follow up to your answer I would like to know if this is normal or does this require some medical attention. The reason I ask so is because I don't see similar things happenings with kids of same age-group.I have gone through the link and will work on the methods involved.

Brief Answer:
It could be a distress call. Look out.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. The concern is more than medical. It calls for your own careful observation. You need to understand the possibility that your child is getting into distress and the underlying cause is getting overlooked. It could be that you are overfeeding the child or pressurising the child without even realising. Some similar issue is possibly involved and your careful observation and experimentation can provide relief to your child. Carefully consider each and every possibility.

Feel free to write back.
