What Does Excessive Urge To Drink Water Suggest?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: Dear Doctor
Of late my wife drinks lots of water which appears to be more than what an average individual takes. She underwent a Gall bladder removal surgery (because of stone) last year March 2014. At that time blood sugar was on the higher side and she presumed that it could be due to this factor and she started taking homeopathic medicines. The medicines have controlled her sugar but the problem of excessive water drinking has not stopped. Could you please guide what could be the reason and any medications or examination required?

Brief Answer:
Need investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,

Thanks for trusting us about her health care.

I can understand your concerns.

Diabetes is one of the most common cause of polydypsia( drinking a lot of water orally).

But as you said it is controlled on medication other common causes in my opinion are hypokalemia, zinc deficiency, increase osmolarity, thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism ( as in her case her tsh level raised) and due to recent blood loss.

To rule out the above mentioned cause she should go for investigation like total RBC count, potassium, sodium, urea, Creatine, zinc, urine examination.

Is she having polyuria also( frequent urination ).

Please revert back to me with my answers.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX

Thank you for your quick response.
Yes she has frequent urination as well. One thing that I forgot to mentioned was that, we have a baby of 15 months old and baby still takes mother's milk only during night though.

Kindly let us know, what specific tests she should undergo considering the above factors. Accordingly we shall do and get back to you.

Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Tests are advised.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for giving me detailed information about her problem.

In her case diabetes is causing this problem but pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, diabetes insipidus, hypokalemia and other causes should be rule out.

You should consult a nephrologist and get her ultrasound scan, renal profile( urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium), osmolality of urine, urine routine and microscopic examination and repeat test for blood sugar.

Please take eltroxin for her hypothyroidism.

Revert back to me with her reports, so I will help you further.

Regards

Hi Doctor,
As advised we consulted a nephrologist and she examined her and advised to undertake few tests. I am scanning that document and sending u. Reports will cone in two days. One of the test was Ultrasound abdomen where report has already come. I will scan that also. After seeing this report my wife got very scared and upset. It showed mild hepatomegaly. In the net she found this to be leading to cancer. I was very worried and had a difficult time managing her in the night. She was crying a lot and you can imagine how it could have been. I tried convincing her that things are normal and will be fine. We will again go with all the reports to the doctor on Tuesday or Wednesday. In the meanwhile I will scan the doctors prescription and tests list.kindly examine and let me know.

Brief Answer:
Mild hepatomegaly.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for uploading once again.

I have gone through her report and it is showing only mild hepatomegaly and which is not a matter of concern right now.

As your doctor advise investigation to rule out the cause, kindly get back to me with her reports, so we will plan accordingly.

Now she should take her antidiabetic drug on time and tsking care of thyroid.

Avoid spicy and oily food which cause polydypsia.

Hope it is useful.

Good luck.
