What Does Fluid In Pelvis Indicate?

default
Posted on Sat, 30 Aug 2014
Question: Hello! Yesterday I had a trans-vaginal ultrasound and it showed a hemorrhagic cyst on the left ovary and mild free fluid in the right adnexa. I'm 2-3 days past ovulation would that put the fluid there? IF not and there is a possibility of PID I had a CT with contract done today on my abdomen and pelvis. Would that show for sure if I had PID or not?

Brief Answer:
It usually give us clues towards final diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your question.
There are a number of reasons for fluid in pelvis. Recent ovulation, PID, ruptured ovarian cyst or ectopic pregnancy are some of them.
CT scan may give clues towards your diagnosis, which may be PID. Endometriosis & ovarian cysts are other possibilities. It is not a recommended test if only PID is suspected. It is usually done to exclude other ovarian pathologies like tumors.
Usually patients history, clinical signs & swab tests give us clues about the possibility of PID. Laparoscopy is usually the gold standard & final investigation to do if doubts persist after non-invasive tests.
Hope all turns out to be normal.
Wish you good health.
Take care.
