What Does Frequent Urination In A 5 Year Old Child Indicate?

Posted on Thu, 14 May 2015
Question: Hi. My 5 year old developed frequent urination out of the blue 2 weeks ago. She is peeing every 5-10 minutes. I took her into an urgent care and they dipped her urine and said it was positive for a uti and put her on antibiotics. 2 days later they called us and said the culture on her urine came back fine. so I took her in to a new pediatrician who diagnosed her with volvovaginitis. She said use uristat a half tablet 2x a day for 2 days and put neosporin in her private parts. Also give her a bath with baking soday. We did all the above and nothing was helping. After a few days I took her into the emergency room at a nearby hospital because she was on and off the toilet every 30 sec. They ran blood tests and ran urine samples which all came back negative for diabetes and uti etc. she started drinking excessively which was freaking me out. In this whole time she has had no pain at all or burning etc. Nothing besides urinating a lot. 2 days later she is crying because she keeps peeing during the day. by the way she never goes potty at night. So I take her back into the hospital and they ran another blood test checking for leukemia. It came back negative so now all tests look good. They sent me home saying polydipsia. So I returned to our pediatrician the next day. The pediatrician said nothing is wrong. My child slept for 14 hours the other night which she never does and fell asleep during the day which she never does and went to bed tonight on her own which she never does. Her tummy looks bloated but she says nothing is wrong. She is still urinating but maybe 4x an hour or maybe 5 times an hour now. I am really worried maybe something can be wrong and everyone is missing it. this is my mother instinct feeling they are missing something. Please help me :(

Brief Answer:
I have two possibilities left on my list, pls go through them

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I am glad all the test results were normal and there was no infection, diabetes or leukemia found.

This leaves us with two possible conditions, and I shall list them both out for tou:

1. Pollakiuria: Also called daytime urination syndrome, children with this syndrome urinate almost every 5-10 minutes (as described by you about your daughter) and espcially only during their waking hours. I noticed in your detailed query that you mentioned your child to go to the loo only when she is awake and not when she falls asleep. This is typically seen with pollakiuria.

It is commonly seen in children between the ages 3-8 years, and is mostly associated with stress. It does not require treatment and subsides on its own within 3-6 weeks (possibly lesser)

2. Overactive bladder: Occurs due to neurological symptoms that cause uncontrollable spasms of the muscles of the urinary bladder or those surrounding the urethra, resulting in frequent urination.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
